How to Counter a Slow Spinny Topsin
It can be difficult to know how to deal with a slow spinny topspin. Although the ball may be slow, the topspin makes it hard to return effectively. This lesson presents 3 options of how to counter such a ball.

00:00:00,630 --> 00:00:06,870
Our lesson today is about how to deal with
that slow spinny topspin. I'm Alois Rosario
2
00:00:06,870 --> 00:00:13,870
from PingSkills and with Jeff Plumb we are
going to show you how.
3
00:00:15,780 --> 00:00:21,880
We are going to cover three techniques The
first one is to use soft hands and block the ball.
4
00:00:25,800 --> 00:00:28,880
Our second technique is to punch the ball.
5
00:00:31,300 --> 00:00:35,800
And our third technique is to counter topspin
the ball.
6
00:00:40,800 --> 00:00:49,000
The slow spinny topspin often comes after you give your opponent a push or a chop and force
7
00:00:49,000 --> 00:00:54,220
them to really lift that ball with a lot of
topspin.
8
00:00:54,220 --> 00:00:58,510
So to get the ball back down on the table
we need to counteract that topspin. The topspin
9
00:00:58,510 --> 00:01:03,150
is going to make that ball fly high up in
the air. We need to just turn the bat over
10
00:01:03,150 --> 00:01:10,150
and keep your hand and wrist nice and soft.
11
00:01:12,800 --> 00:01:22,850
So my bat is just angled over the ball so that it's directing the ball down on to the table rather than up into the air.
12
00:01:23,719 --> 00:01:30,170
The softness in your hand acts like a cushion. If your hand is really hard all the spin is
13
00:01:30,170 --> 00:01:36,950
going to be absorbed into the rubber and fly
out. So the softness just cushions the spin
14
00:01:36,950 --> 00:01:43,950
a little bit and makes the return a little
bit softer.
15
00:02:19,930 --> 00:02:23,360
When the ball is shorter on the table you
need to make sure that you get a little bit
16
00:02:23,360 --> 00:02:28,250
closer to the net. So that you are getting to
the bounce of the ball, otherwise the ball
17
00:02:28,250 --> 00:02:35,250
is coming up here and becomes very awkward.
18
00:02:38,500 --> 00:02:48,480
The principle on the forehand is very similar to the backhand so keeping your hand nice and soft and counteracting the amount of spin
19
00:02:48,480 --> 00:02:54,010
by turning you bat over the ball slightly.
Remember if you're moving in for the short
20
00:02:54,010 --> 00:03:00,280
ball on both the backhand and the forehand
for left handers we move our left foot in.
21
00:03:00,280 --> 00:03:07,280
For a right hander you move your right foot
in for both backhand and forehand.
22
00:03:11,180 --> 00:03:15,600
If the ball is coming at a reasonable depth
you just need to be nice and stable with your legs.
23
00:03:29,800 --> 00:03:35,560
Our second option is to punch the ball. With the punch you're generating a little bit more speed.
24
00:03:35,560 --> 00:03:41,870
To make the punch you need to start
with your bat up quite high, because from
25
00:03:41,870 --> 00:03:48,540
here you are going to come through in a straight
line. With the punch your contact is very
26
00:03:48,540 --> 00:03:55,540
flat, you don't want to bush the ball at all,because
that just slows down the contact. So we start
27
00:03:56,440 --> 00:04:02,210
up high, we come through nice and flat and
we want to keep the ball on the bat a very
28
00:04:02,210 --> 00:04:08,830
short amount of time so that it's just a real
fast contact on the ball.
29
00:04:08,830 --> 00:04:15,130
We want to also try and contact the ball at
a high point. From a high point we have a
30
00:04:15,130 --> 00:04:21,239
direct line onto the table.
If you contact the ball low it's very difficult
31
00:04:21,239 --> 00:04:24,620
to get that direct line without going into
the net.
32
00:04:24,620 --> 00:04:31,620
So from up here we have a direct line to punch the ball straight down onto the table.
33
00:04:49,400 --> 00:04:52,600
The principles of the forehand punch are very
34
00:04:52,600 --> 00:04:59,600
similar. Start with your bat up high and punch
straight through the ball.
35
00:05:10,300 --> 00:05:17,400
Our third option in dealing with that slow
spinny loop is to counter topspin the ball.
36
00:05:17,470 --> 00:05:22,840
To counter topspin the ball our starting position
is up at a similar height to our block and
37
00:05:22,840 --> 00:05:28,919
our punch. Now though we are going to contact
the ball with topspin by brushing over the
38
00:05:28,919 --> 00:05:34,300
top of the ball.
So our angle needs to be turned forward,
39
00:05:34,300 --> 00:05:40,430
so we are spinning over the ball. And the same with the forehand spinning over the ball.
40
00:05:40,430 --> 00:05:46,220
Because our opponent has given us a lot of
topspin we don't need to lift our stroke at
41
00:05:46,220 --> 00:05:53,220
all. Off a block or a back spin ball we might
need to lift our stroke to lift the ball over
42
00:05:53,620 --> 00:05:57,419
the net.
When our opponent has already put that topspin
43
00:05:57,419 --> 00:06:02,400
on for us we just need to come straight forward.
44
00:06:46,700 --> 00:06:57,740
So now we have three options, soft block, punch and counter top spin. The counter topspin is the most difficult for you to make
45
00:06:58,210 --> 00:07:03,669
because you're coming through with a fine
angle on your bat. So the contact becomes
46
00:07:03,669 --> 00:07:09,800
quite difficult. The other two, the soft block
and the punch are fairly similar in difficulty level.
47
00:07:09,800 --> 00:07:13,280
So out of your three options the soft block,
48
00:07:13,280 --> 00:07:18,100
the punch and the counterspin you need to
decide firstly what is comfortable for you
49
00:07:18,100 --> 00:07:23,310
and secondly what is going to be difficult
for me as your opponent. If I'm top spinning
50
00:07:23,310 --> 00:07:27,750
the ball and my opponent blocks it softly
it might be difficult for me because I've
51
00:07:27,750 --> 00:07:33,290
got to move forward to get to that ball. Similarly if I'm top spinning from quite close to the
52
00:07:33,290 --> 00:07:37,669
table and they punch the ball it might be
too fast for me and I might not be able to
53
00:07:37,669 --> 00:07:43,110
get to it. And the third option, if I topspin
and they counter spin it, well that is going
54
00:07:43,110 --> 00:07:47,229
to be difficult for anyone because the balls
going to come fast and the topspin is going
55
00:07:47,229 --> 00:07:49,800
to kick up and that is going to make it really
tough.
